Digits:

  • A system involving numerals utilizes the use of symbols such as 1 or 2, or a set of symbols, such as 56 to represent the different numbers available. This single symbol is referred to as a numerical digit. The word "digit" pertains to the ten digits that are synonymous to the ten fingers our hands, and those that are equivalent to the ten symbols used in the widely used base-10 numeral system.
  • The absolute value of the base determines how many different digits are necessary for a given numeral system which are based on integers. For instance, the binary system that is of base 2 only needs two digits, whereas the decimal system that is of base 10 requires ten digits that runs from 0 and ends in 1.
