Activity 1
Aim: To demonstrate the process of osmosis
Materials required a large potato tuber, a beaker with water, a strong sugar solution
Procedure:
1. Cut one end of the potato tuber to make it flat.
2. At the other end, scoop out some of the potato to make a cylindrical cavity.
3. Pour a strong sugar solution into the cavity.
4. Mark the initial level of the sugar solution with a ball point pen.
This set-up is called a potato osmoscope. Place the potato
osmoscope in a beaker containing red-coloured water (Fig. 1.7).
Observation: After a few hours, you will see the level
of the sugar solution rise in the osmoscope and
becomes coloured.
Conclusion: The level of the sugar solution rises because
of osmosis. The water molecules move through the cell
membrane of the potato cells, from its higher concentration
area to its lower concentration area, that is, towards the
sugar solution. The cell membranes of the potato cells act

as a semi-permeable membrane.
