Oxygen is liberated at anode on electrolysis of HNO_3

Explanation:

On electrolysis of dilute HNO_3, the following reaction occurs:

HNO_3(aq)\rightarrow H^{+}(aq)+NO_3^-(aq)

H_2O(l)\rightarrow H^{+}(aq)+OH^-(aq)

There are H^{+} ,  NO_3^{-} and OH^- ions.

At cathode which is a negative terminal , cations will be reduced. At anode which is a positive terminal , anions will be oxidized.

At cathode:

4H^{+}+4e^- \rightarrow 2H_2(g)

So, hydrogen is produced.

At anode:

As dicharge potential of OH^- is much lower than that of NO_3^-

4OH^-\rightarrow 2H_2O+O_2+4e^-

At anode O_2 is produced.
