The elastic constant of a substance is defined as the ratio of stress to strain.

The stress may be normal or tangential .Similarly the strain may be longitudinal,lateral, volumetric strain etc.

Hence, the elastic constant  k = \frac{stress}{strain}

We are asked to determine the dimensional formula of elastic constant.

The dimensional formula of elastic constant k is -

                                  [k] \ =\frac{[stress]}{[strain]}

                                               =\frac{M^{1} L^{-1} T^{-2}} {M^{0} L^{0} T^{0}}

                                               =M^{1} L^{-1} T^{-2}     [ANS]
