Although the notion of higher dimensions goes back to René Descartes, substantial development of a higher-dimensional geometry only began in the 19th century, via the work of Arthur Cayley, William Rowan Hamilton, Ludwig Schläfli and Bernhard Riemann.

In the writings of Aristotle (384-322 B.C.), Pappus (end of the third century), and, according to Simplicius (sixth century A.D.), of Ptolemy (about 150 A.D.) there are speculations about the number of dimensions of space and the possibility or impossibility of there being more than three.
