The dinoflagellates (Greek δῖνος dinos "whirling" and Latin flagellum "whip, scourge") are single-celled eukaryotes constituting the phylum Dinoflagellata and usually considered algae. Dinoflagellates are mostly marine plankton, but they also are common in freshwater habitats.
