Symptoms usually occur 1 to 7 days after the bacteria enter your body:

  • Fever and chills
  • Sore throat, hoarseness
  • Painful swallowing
  • Croup-like (barking) cough
  • Drooling (suggests airway blockage is about to occur)
  • Bluish coloration of the skin
