Symptoms and Causative Agent
Diphtheria is caused by bacteria called Corynebacterium diphtheriae. The bacteria secrete a powerful toxin that causes damage to body tissues.
Vaccination
Diphtheria is not given as a single vaccine. It is generally combined with tetanus.World Health Organisation included diphtheria toxoid in its list of recommended immunizations for its Expanded Programme
How it works?
The bacteria that causes diphtheria makes a harmful protein, called a toxin. People who develop an immune response to this toxin are protected against the disease. The diphtheria vaccine is made by taking the diphtheria toxin and inactivating it with a chemical. The inactivated toxin is called a "toxoid."
