TAnswer:

A sentence can be written in any form.

The examples of direct and indirect narration are:

Direct

James said"I will be home tonight"

He said "she has taken my book.

Indirect

James said that he would be home that night.

He said that she had taken his book.

The past tenses are always used since the words had already been said before by someone else.

In this case, the first sentence said "tonight"

So "tonight" changes to "that night" because it had already passed.

Hope it helps you mate.

All the best
