1.    All inverted commas or quotation marks are omitted and the sentence ends with a full stop.

2.    Conjunction ‘that’ is added before the indirect statement.

3.    The pronoun ‘I’ is changed to ‘she’. (The Pronoun is changed in Person)

Direct speech

In direct speech the speaker's atcual words are quoted in inverted commas.

Indirect Speech

In indirect speech the speaker's actual words are not written, it's written indirectly.

Rules -

1. In direct speech "said" is used. In indirect, said changes to told if its affirmative sentence, said changes to asked if its a question, said changes to exclaimed if its exclamatory sentence. It gets changed according to the sentence.

Ex - Told, asked, exclaimed, requested, ordered, advice etc.

2. In indirect speech the inverted commas are removed. The sentence changes to past tense.

The conjunctions like that, if, whether are used in indirect speech.

3. In indirect speech,

I changes to - he/she

We changes to - They

You can change to - he/she/they/we

4. In indirect speech,

Will changes to would

Shall changes to should

Can changes to could

may changes to might.

5. In indirect speech,

The present tense sentence changes to its past perfect tense.

For ex -

She says, " I go to walk "

=> She said that, she went to walk.

Here go changes to went and not goes.
