Question:

Explain Direct and indirect Speech.

Answer:

The words spoken by a person can be reported to another person in two ways.

And they are:-

  • Direct Speech
  • Indirect Speech

We can represent the words as, are said by the speaker or by changing the words but keeping the meaning intact.

★Direct Speech

In a direct speech, the actual words of the speaker are kept within inverted commas and the first letter of the direct speech is always capital.

Examples:

  • He said, “I am ready”.
  • Mohan said,“I am ill”.

★Indirect Speech

When a speaker's statement is expressed in his own words, rather than saying it in his own words, it is called Indirect Speech. Indirect Speech is not placed within inverted commas.

Examples:

  • He said that he was ready.
  • Mohan said that he was ill.

Some rules of changing direct to indirect speech:

  1. Change of the person.
  2. Change of time.
  3. Changes in other parts of the speech.
