DIRECT AND INDIRECT SPEECH Guidelines: Quotation marks are omitted. At times ‘that’ is used. Two conjunctions cannot be put together. Changes in the tense of verb of direct speech: If reported verb is in present or future tense, the tense is not changed. e.g. The old woman says, “I am lonely.” Ans. If reporting verb is in past tense, following changes takes place:- Simple Present – Simple Past e.g. Anjali said, “I am thirsty.” Ans. Present Progressive – Past Progressive e.g. They said, “We are completing our project.” Ans. Present Perfect – Past Perfect e.g. Ram said, “I have solved that exercise.” Ans. Will and shall in many cases – would e.g. Raj said, “My father will sell the car.” Ans. Simple Past remains unchanged or sometimes changes to Past Perfect depending on the statement. e.g. The dentist said, “I lived in Spain for many years.” Ans. Personal Pronouns and Possessive Adjectives in the first & second place changes to third place. But if the person addressed in the reported speech, the 2nd person is changed to the 1st person. e.g. i) I – he/she She said, “I am unwell.” Ans. ii) I – he/his Ram said, “I have lost my book.”
