  • Direct speech describes when something is being repeated exactly as it was - usually in between a pair of inverted commas. For example : The inspector said, "I am glad to be with you today."
  • When the meaning of the speech is conveyed in the reporter's words, it is called indirect speech. For example : The inspector said that he was glad to be with him that day.

Indirect speech definition:
