Direct speech is a report of the exact words used by a speaker or writer. The words spoken appear within inverted commas “sentence ” and should be exactly word to word as spoken or written.
✧ Indirect Speech ✧
When we report what someone said in our own words, it is called Indirect speech. We do not use inverted commas,do not write the exact words as spoken or written by someone.
Rules For Changing From D to ID
✪ Remove comma and inverted commas.
✪ Put "that" between the reporting and reported speeches.(it is optional to put "that" between the reporting and reported speech)
✪ Change the 1st letter of reported speech into small letter except for "I"
✪ Change the pronoun of the direct speech according to the rules
✪ Change the tense of the direct speech appropriately according to rules
✪ Change the words expressing nearness in time or places of the direct speech into its appropriate words expressing distance
✪ If interrogative type of sentences are given add if / whether {especially for yes/no type question}
✪ Mainly past tense should be converted to past perfect tense
Words of direct speech will turn to indirect in the following way :
⭐ Now - Then
⭐ Today - That day
⭐ Last night - previous night
⭐ Said - Told
⭐ Will be - would be
