So, here are 7 reasons why I believe setting up a direction is far more effective than just having goals.
Reason 1 - It's much easier to set a direction than to set a goal.
Goals can be daunting. "I will lose 10kgs of weight" is a goal, but "My fitness will inspire people" is a direction. Also, its difficult to decide if the goal is right for me. Doubts set in after some time. Is losing 10 kgs a good goal? Does it necesssarily make me fitter? Directions are easier to understand and hence once can take a quick decision and make a committment.
Reason 2 - Having a direction makes it much easier to adapt and evolve.
Kodak was in the business of making photographic film. Once digital photography emerged, they didnt have a business any more. Had they had the direction of "Helping people capture memories", they may have adapted and changed faster. My work is about "Helping youth discover themselves". Today, I run workshops, but tomorrow I may provide an online mentoring platform to 100 million youth. And then, I may launch a chain of cafeterias which students can get access to peer learning, collaborative projects and even job opportunities. Getting my drift?
Reason 3 - Direction forces me to think about the 'next' step and take action.
Every journey is made of individual steps. Every journey begins with the first step. And then, there is a another step, and another, and so on. When I know the direction in which I want to move, I can easily think of one small step I can take today. I may not know what after that, but at least I can take one step. I may not know how to achieve my goal of having 1 million followers on Linkedin. But I can certainly take the first step of writing this one article, towards the broad direction of becoming a power user of Linkedin.
Reason 4 - A direction is like a website 'theme'. It allows my life to fit together into a story.
Many times, I find myself in a mess because I have so many goals and they all seem very different from each other. I want to write a cookbook about laddoos, I want to run an Iron man race, I want to travel across Indian villages, I want to raise funds for my startup, etc etc. And, my wife is looking at me and reminding me that I have a wife and have two kids, and have only 24 hours in a day! But, when my direction is 'Inspiring youth and making them believe in themselves', suddenly all of these ideas seem to make sense. I can break them down into smaller bits and tackle them one at a time, and they still fit together like jigsaw pieces.
Reason 5 - Once direction is set, I can increase or decrease the speed.
This comes in very handy. There are times when walking is the right speed, and then times when I'm ready to run or even fly. Sometimes all I can do is crawl. But, a crawl is still better than standing still. As long as I'm moving a little bit closer in the direction of my choice, I'm making progress. There will always be slowdowns, and there will be some leaps too. Having a direction allows me to vary the throttle. In fact, having that freedom gives me power to increase the throttle to full. I know that if the speed becomes too much, I can always slow it down, and hence there is no fear of going too fast and breaking down!
