What is wind?
Wind is the horizontal movement of air from a region of high pressure to a region of low pressure. Note, the word horizontal. If air moves vertically it is called air current.
Yes. Wind have a direction. The direction of a wind named from the direction it originate. For example, let us consider a wind is traveling from east to west, then the direction of the wind is east.
India experience varied range of wind and obviously wind direction is also varied. One of the complex of all those is, monsoon wind. Here, I am considering general pattern of monsoon wind for better understanding of wind direction.
As monsoon wind originates from westen indian ocean and goes towards north east States of india. If you see the map of these places then you will be able to identify that this wind moves from South-west to north-east direction. So, the wind is said to be South-west and you must have read or heard about the term South-west monsoon. If you consider reversing of this monsoon wind, the wind returns back more or less in the same path. Only the direction reverses. And now the wind is north-easterly.
Note: Obviously there are micro scale wind direction in monsoon wind as well.

Wind speeds are controlled by local pressure anomalies which in turn are influenced by the temperature and local topographic features. The wind speed exhibits a wide variation not only from place to place but also during the day. The wind direction may influence evaporation if the surrounding environment has different humidity in different directions.

The wind speed is measured using an anemometer (usually a cup type). The number of rotations of the anemometer over a time interval is displayed by a counter or logged using a data logger and indicates the average speed over that interval. Normally, the wind speed over a three-minute period is considered as the instantaneous wind speed at that time. The daily wind run or the average wind speed is calculated from counter readings on successive days at the principal observation times.
