  • The 19th century Napoleonic Wars were, in many ways, a precursor to the 20th century world wars which would first shake the entire Western world with WWI and then with WWII almost the whole world. Like the World Wars, several nations engaged in the Napoleonic Wars. These effects were witnessed across the globe in a world that became increasingly interrelated.
  • Leipzig's main battle occurred between 16th and 19th October 1813 in Leipzig, Saxony, and was one of the largest Napoleonic Wars. At the Leipzig Battle, the French military was composed of about 225,000 soldiers under Napoleon. It included troops from Italy, Poland and Germany in addition to French soldiers. They all battle the Sixth Coalition 's united armies, consisting of Russian, Swedish, Austrian and Prussian troops and a British rocket brigade, which consisted about 380,000 soldiers.
  • The Russian, Prussian, Austrian and Swedish coalition armies commanded by Russian Tsar Alexander I and Prince Karl Philip defeated Napoleon's French army.
  • Decided to be again defeated, Napoleon was driven back to France while the alliance retained its strength, dissolving the Rhine confederation and invading France at the beginning of the next year. In May 1814, Napoleon was persuaded to abdicate and exiled to Elba.
