Evergreen forest:

Evergreen forest is a category containing multi-story forests, where more than 80% of tree species keep their leaves during the entire year.

The evergreen forests of the Mediterranean do not seem to need further efforts in terms of the establishment of protected areas, as shown by the assessments conducted in various protectionist areas (see Red List and Article 17 of the Habitats Directive).

The evergreen forests of the Mediterranean do not seem to need further efforts in terms of the establishment of protected areas, as shown by the assessments conducted in various protectionist areas (see Red List and Article 17 of the Habitats Directive). However, some management aspects can be addressed in order to improve the ecological function of Mediterranean evergreen forests. For example, it is necessary to ensure the maintenance of the tree cover and diversity (in structure and species composition) in order to protect the ecological niches of insects (e.g., several species of beetle for example the great capricorn beetle), nesting birds (i.e., woodpeckers, Eurasian wryneck and hoopoe) and bats. In general, the maintenance of the evergreen cover limits the effects of climate change, reducing the effect of drying up the soil while maintaining a good humidity level of its and consequently the ability to efficiently maintain active biogeochemical soil cycles (e.g., nitrogen cycle and of carbon). Specifically, in order to keep the aforementioned functions active, it is considered necessary to recommend management activities that limit the cutting of trees (see Fig. 6), grazing of domestic animals in the forest (see Fig. 7), and extraction activities especially for cork-oak woods (i.e., bark harvesting). Excessive cuts or poor silvicultural management can decrease forest diversity, density and biomass, destroying the necessary tree cover of the land and triggering species extinction and land erosive phenomena especially in years of poor atmospheric precipitation.
