Most of gauge system especially broad gauge railways are mostly served for the most densely populated districts that are usually fertile hence negleting the sparsely populated areas.
Usually the transhipping freight from cars of one gauge to cars of another is very labour and time consuming hence increase the risk of damage to goods.

The Indian Railways have a multi gauge system. The various gauges are - Broad gauge, Metre gauge and Narrow gauge. The disadvantages of this system are:
1. The inconvenience faced by the travellers on the metre and narrow gauge tracks. The train ride on these tracks is bumpy and insecure.
2. The change of gauge involves expenses. The change in fare is irksome for the travellers as well as the railway administration.
