Disadvantages of yellow revolution

The term yellow revolution has been used to describe the dramatic increase in oil seed production in India which began in 1986. The production became double between 1986/87 season and a decade later in 1996/97. Although production of oil seeds increased but the yellow revolution did not benefit the farmer and consumer. So the disadvantages of yellow revolution are mentioned.
The self sufficiency in production of edible oils was really not acceptable to the world bank. The world bank's argument was that India lacked a comparative advantage in oil seeds when compared with the production trend in the U.S. and the European Union, should therefore be importing edible oil. Ignoring the ground realities and blindly following world bank's flawed prescription (under pressure since India was restructuring its economy), India started the process of phased liberalization of edible oil imports from 1994-95. Edible oil exporting nations like Malaysia, Indonesia and Brazil flooded the Indian markets with soya and palm oil. While the wholesale prices of edible oil rose by 14 percent, production slackened. The only beneficiary of the Government's disastrous policy was the private trade which imported the sunflower oil and palmolein oil at about Rs. 22000 per tonne and after blending it with groundnut and mustard oil, sold it for Rs. 38000 per tonne. This neither benefited farmer nor consumer.
We did not get advantage from yellow revolution that we were expecting from it because we are still battling a shortage of oil seeds. We are short in oil seeds by 50 percent of our consumption that's why we have to import edible oils to fulfill our demand. So there is a need of yet another yellow revolution in India.
