J.J. Thompson discovered the electron, the first of the subatomic particles, using the cathode ray tube experiment. He found that many different metals release cathode rays, and that cathode rays were made of electrons, very small negatively charged particles.

it's not cathode ray my friend, it's alpha particles (he 4 isotope) produced by radium which was covered by lead material. alpha particles passed into the gold foil and gave 3 results:-
most passed through it
some were deflected at less angle
few were deflected 180 degree.
