The region then came under British influence. The ruins of Hampi were surveyed in 1800 by Scottish Colonel Colin Mackenzie, first Surveyor General of India. Mackenzie wrote that the Hampi site was abandoned and only wildlife live there.

Hampi wad founded by two local princes Harihara and Bukka Rai in 1336. The capital city of Vijayanagar, Hampi was a show piece of imperial magnificence. Hampi formed one of the cores of the capital of the Vijayanagar empire from 1336-1565.
