Frisch confirmed this experimentally on 13 January 1939. For proving that the barium resulting from his bombardment of uranium with neutrons was the product of nuclear fission, Hahn was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1944 (the sole recipient) "for his discoveryof the fission of heavy nuclei".
