  • Penicillins (P, PCN, or PEN) were identified in Penicillium moulds, notably P. chrysogenum and P. rubens.
  • The bulk of penicillins used in medicine are derived chemically from natural penicillins.
  • Despite the discovery of other natural penicillins, only two pure compounds are now used in clinical practise: penicillin G (for intravenous use) and penicillin V (for oral use) (given by mouth).
  • They belong to the -lactam class of antibiotics.
  • They're still used to treat a number of bacterial infections today, but due to their broad use, many bacteria have developed resistance.
