=> The protons were first discovered by "Ernest Rutherford" . He performed that famous gold foil experiment in which he took a thin as possible, that was approximately 1000atoms thick...

He bombarded the alpha Ray's (doubly positive helium atom) with the gold foil and he observed many variations in the path of the Ray's. Many Ray's got deflected which means that there is an obstruction in their path and it is positive becoz it repels the alpha Ray's , which is positive (same charge repels each other) and that's how the proton discovered. It is represented as 'p+'.

It was also observed that the hydrogen ion had the smallest size among all ionized gases.The discovery of the proton is credited to Ernest Rutherford, who proved that the nucleus of the hydrogen atom (i.e. a proton) is present in the nuclei of all other atoms in the year 1917.
