The word proton is Greek for "first", and this name was given to the hydrogen nucleus by Ernest Rutherford in 1920. In previous years, Rutherford had discovered that the hydrogen nucleus (known to be the lightest nucleus) could be extracted from the nuclei of nitrogen by atomic collisions.

Goldstein noticed another set of rays of rays travelling in a direction opposite to the cathode rays, i.e. from anode towards cathode, when a perforated cathode was used in the discharge tube. He called these rays as canal rays since tjese rays passed through holes or canals in the cathode. These rays were named as positive rays or anode rays.
