This Act that gave the authority to set up two independent dominions – India and Pakistan – also empowered the Constituent Assemblies of both these dominions to frame and adopt any Constitution. The Constituent Assemblies also had the power to repeal any Act of the British Parliament. The first sitting of the Constituent Assembly for the dominion of India took place on August 14, 1947. This Constituent Assembly, headed by Jawaharlal Nehru, was a sovereign and a legislative body. The seven-member drafting committee was set up on August 29, 1947, with B.R. Ambedkar as the Chairperson.
