in human beings air is taken into the body through the nostrils.the air passing through the nostrils is filtered by fine hairs and mucus.it then passes through the throat which has ring of cartilages to ensure that the air passage doesn't collapse.then it goes to the lungs.within the lungs the passage divides into smaller and smaller tubes which finally terminate into a ballon like structure called alveoli.it provide a surface area for exchange of gases.the blood from all over the body brings co2to release in the alveoli.and the alveolar air is taken up by the blood vessels to release it in the oxygen deficit region.the lungs always contain a residual volume of air .for higher organism the diffusion pressure cannot alone take care of the oxygen delivery to all parts of the body in such case oxygen is taken by respiratory pigments.in humans the respiratory pigment is haemoglobin.it has very high affinity for oxygen
