NORTHERN PLAINS

# the northern plains of India are Alluvial Plains of India . They are formed by the sediments brought from the mountains and deposited By the Rivers in the depression formed after the uplift of the Himalayas namely the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra and their tributaries .

# the plane spread over an area of 7 lakh square kilometre. The length of this plain is 2400 kilometre long and 240 kilometre broad .

# it is densely populated and intensively cultivated area .

# with adequate water supply and favourable climate it is agriculturally a productive part of India .

# on the division of rivers in the Northern Plains are divided into three divisions ,

~ Punjab Plains covers the western part of the northern plains . They are formed by Indus river and its tributaries .

~ Ganga Plains extends between ghaagar and the Teesta river , was spread over the states of Haryana, Delhi, UP ,Bihar, Uttarakhand and West Bengal .

~ Brahmaputra plain lies to the east of Ganga Plains. It covers area of Assam .

# on the basis of relief northern plain is divided into four divisions .

~bhabar - the rivers, after descending down from the mountains deposited pebbles in narrow belt of 8 to 16 kilometre lying parallel to the slopes of shivaliks. This is known as Bhabar. The streams disappear in this belt .

~ Terai - Below the bhabar belt, the streams and rivers Re emerge and create a wet, swampy and marshy region called teri . It was the thickly forested area rich in wildlife. But now the area is cleared for cultivation .

~ Bhangar - it is the largest part of the northern plains made up of older alluvium . This region lie about the flood Plains of the river and present a terrace like feature . The soil is not fertile here. It contains calcareous deposits of Kankar.

~ khadar - The newer , younger deposits of the food plains found in the lower river valley and at the mouth of the river. These are very fertile and get renewed every year by annual floods they are suitable for intensive cultivation .
