Jamaica Kincaid’s story “Girl” is more a monologue, seemingly spoken by the mother, an adult woman. This prose poem talks about the advice which the mother gives to her daughter, interspersed with a few comments by the daughter. As a woman of African descent, Kincaid explores  race, class and gender issues. 'This prose poem poignantly exemplifies several of these themes.

Explanation:

  • In the prose poem, the writer says that society conditions the girl child’s awareness of her position as the "other" gender by way of a set of indeterminate expectations and  standards gradually imposed on her. The story itself comprises a set of directions for a girl child. Her mother provides these orders, and Kincaid argues that patriarchy and bigotry internalized in home continues — through family and informal education.
  • The advise is how to perform certain domestic behaviors, like creating Antiguan meals, and how to be a decent woman and uphold sexual integrity. The woman speaks about how the daughter must interact with  others and how to treat herself with a man in a meaningful way.
  • In the prose poem, the girl talks only twice. She first stood up to a request of her mom that transformed into an accusation, then then again at the end, as she asked her mom a clarifying question. It suddenly concludes with the mother's sarcastic query wondering whether her daughter didn't grasp the way to act for what she had been taught.
  • While the daughter is not teenage yet, the mother is worried that if she goes on with her present behaviour, it contributes to a promiscuity existence. The Mother claims that the standard of her life in the society defined by the women's respectability or reputation. Therefore, sexuality must be carefully guarded and even concealed to uphold a respectable front.  The mother scolds the girl for the way she is walking, the way she is playing marbles and how she has to interact with other people. The mother's ongoing attention on this issue illustrates how badly her daughter needs to know that she is "not a boy" and must behave in such a manner as to gain her appreciation from the community.
  • It is the mother's conviction that domestic knowledge will not only shield her daughter from promiscuity and disaster, but will also strengthen her as a productive community member and the head of her household. Domestic awareness contributes, beyond doubt, to prosperity for many Antiguan people, which in effect earns support from the family and community. Therefore, housework brings women strength and even reputation, as well as holding them occupied and away from temptation; hence, domesticity brings respectability
