No chef I know has gotten into cooking for the money, or gotten out of it for the lack of it either. This is a demanding career that can absolutely wreck your body. Retirement for some chefs is a corporate gig that might pay upwards of 100k in salary. Most though, just don’t go that way, they take their scarred hands, burned arms, shot knees, and ruined backs and do something else entirely. Maybe food related, maybe not, but I promise not a single one says “ I would have stayed for an extra 10k a year”.

We leave because either we have to, or because we can’t find a job, not because the pay isn’t good enough.
