Once the metals are extracted from their ores , they are mostly impure and need to be refined.
These metals are refined mostly by a method called electrolytic refining or electro refining.
The pure metal is taken as cathode and impure metal us taken as anode. The salt solution of the metal us acidified and taken as the electrolyte.
When electricity is passed through them , The metal ions from anode goes into the electrolyte , an equivalent amount of metal ions from solution is deposited in the cathode.
As the process continues the cathode becomes bigger while the anode becomes thinner.
Anode is replaced often.
The soluble impurities are dissolved in the solution while the insoluble impurities settle down at the bottom of the anode mud and is called anode mud.
Hope it helped......
