Maslow's hierarchy of needs is used to study how humans intrinsically partake in behavioral motivation. Maslow used the terms "physiological," "safety," "belonging and love," or "socialneeds" "esteem," and "self-actualization" to describe the pattern through which human motivations generally move.

SOLUTION :

Maslow's need hierarchy theory of motivation :

According to Maslow human needs can be categorised into following five needs :

  • Psychological needs
  • Safety needs
  • Social needs
  • Estimate and status needs
  • Self actualization needs

1.Psychological needs :

These needs are most essential for the very survival and maintenance of self. These include need for food, clothing and shelter. These needs must be met repeatedly within short time period such as hunger. Employees work repeatedly for satisfying these needs.

2. Safety and security needs :

After satisfying the psychological needs an individual wants safety. These include protection from physical dangers such as fire, sickness, accident ,etc. as well as economic safety such as job security, safety of property, old age pension, etc. Safety needs serve as motivator to employees.

3. Social needs :

Formal organisation structure fulfills the needs of the organisation but in order to satisfy social needs, workers form informal groups in an organisation. However social needs can be satisfied only partially.

4. Esteem needs :

Self esteem needs include need for self respect, self confidence, freedom, status, recognition and appreciation, etc. These needs became motivator only after reasonable satisfaction of psychological, safety and social needs. However people at lower level generally do not have esteem needs.

5. Self actualization needs :

These needs helps an individual in developing his potential for continued self development. These needs continuously motivate people as they do not end in the usual sense.

Of the five needs, mentioned above first three regarded as lower order needs and the last two as higher order needs.
