The concept of rebellion in Wuthering Heights

Wuthering Heights is one of the most popular novels of English Literature. A Gothic love story the entire novel reflects the concept of rebellion.

The central character of the story is the dark foundling -Heathcliff. The story traces the rebellion of Heathcliff against society, religion and the people of Wuthering Heights.

Heathcliff was madly in love with the beautiful Catherine, the daughter of Mr. Earnshaw, who had found Heathcliff. Catherine rebelled against society by falling in love with Heathcliff. She considered that his and her souls were one dwelling in two bodies.

However she chose a noble and rich man -Edgar Linton over Heathcliff in marriage.

This led to the rebellion of Heathcliff against Catherine and all associated with her. His rebellion led to Isabella, the teenage sister of Edgar and the sister-in-law of Catherine, to rebel against her family and elope with him, however only to be tortured and tormented by Heathcliff.    

The entire novel thus traces the various stages  of rebellion in the life of Heathcliff and those associated with him.
