The doctrine of lapse was an annexation policy applied by the Lord Dalhousie in India before 1858. According to the doctrine, any Indian princely state under the suzerainty of the British East India Company , as a vassal state under the British subsidiary system, would have its princely status abolished  if the ruler was either "manifestly incompetent or died without a male heir.

consequences -

1. many Indian states lost their sovereignty and became British territories.

2. this led to a lot of unrest among the Indian princess.

3. a lot of people were unhappy with the illegal nature of this doctrine and this was one of the cause of indian revolt of 1857.

4. dalhousie retjrned to britain in 1856. after the Indian revolt broke out in 1857, his governance was widely criticized as one of the causes of the rebellion.
