As a teacher I sometimes experience the fear of reciting poems to new students who have been frustrated by the old teachers. Such teachers, perhaps, are intimidated by the verse itself, portraying it as a kind of algebraic answer that will be revealed with some mysterious matric code. This fear is dispelled, however, when students are given the courage to interpret and engage with poetry in their own terms.
