→ Connective tissue link and support other tissues and organs of the body. The basic components of connective tissues are matrix connective tissue cells and fibres. The different types of connective tissue are

  • loose connective tissue
  • dense connective tissue
  • skeletal tissue
  • vascular tissue

Loose connective tissue consists of areolar and adipose tissues. Areolar tissue is present under the skin as subcutaneous tissue, in between and around muscles, nerves and blood vessels and between the lobes and lobules of compound glands. It binds parts together and also provides strength, elasticity, support to the parts. Adipose tissue, located mainly beneath the skin, is specialised to store fats. Adipose tissue is a poor conductor of heat, it reduces heat loss through the skin. There are two types of adipose tissue : white (or yellow) fat and brown fat. Brown fat in infants plays role in non-shivering thermogenesis.

→ In white fibrous connective tissue, collagen is dominant and cells are mainly fibroblasts. A tendon, which comnects skeletal muscles to bones is a modification of white fibrous tissue. It is tough and inelastic. Yellow elastic connective tissue has strength and elasticity, thus, allows stretching of various organs. It forms cords called ligaments which attach one bone to another.

Cartilage is a soft skeletal tissue, consisting cartilage cells and matrix. Hyaline cartilage is the most prevalent carrilage. It forms articular surfaces at the joints of long bones, rings of trachea and bronchi, sternal parts of ribs, hyoid apparatus, nasal septum and also part of larynx. White fibtous cartilage occurs in the intervertebral discs and in the pubic symphysis. Yellow elastic fibrocartilage is found in the pinna and external auditory canal of the ear, Eustachian tubes, epiglottis and tip of the nose.

Bones have a hard ground substance rich in calcium salts and collagen fibres which gives bone strength. Bone cells are of three kinds - osteoblasts, osteocytes and osteoclasts. The matrix of the bone occurs as laters called lamellae.

Blood is a highly specialized mobile connective tissue that helps in the transport of various substances. It is composed of a fluid, the plasma and the cells, the blood corpuscles (RBCs, WBCs, platelets).
