Discuss five methods of food preservation
Answers
1.DRYING - This method reduces water content sufficiently and prevents bacterial growth
2.PASTEURISATION - pasteurisation is pressurised heating for a short time.pasteurised milk needs to be stored under refrigerators
3.VACUUM PACKING - Vacuum packing stores food in vacuum environment, usually an air tight bag or bottle.
4.FREEZING - When foods kept at below FREEZING temperature ,most chemical changes takes place at such a reduced rate that only minor changes are noticeable even after long periods of storage .
* Microorganisms are generally more resistant to cold than to heat
5.CANNING - It involves cooking food and sealing it in sterile cans or jars ,this is followed by boiling the the container to kill the bacteria

Food preservation is a method by which food is kept from damage after harvesting. There are five methods of food preservation:-
- Drying:
It is the most common method of food preservation and it helps in reducing water that causes the growth of bacteria. It reduces the weight of food that can be easily carried.
- Freezing:
It is a method of storing food in a cold place. e.g, Potatoes can be easily stored in some dark places but the preparation would be frozen.
- Vacuum packing:
It creates a vacuum for making the bottles and bags airtight, so that bacteria die without getting oxygen inside the vacuum.
- Canning and bottling:
Packaging of food cans and bottles weakens the bacteria because foods are cooked for a period of time, if a can or bottle is opened then there should be a risk of spoilage.
- Controlled use of organism:
This method is mainly used for storing beer, wine, and cheese because they are stored for a longer period of time.
