See, reservations or such distinctions were made solely because there were people who needed upliftment and secondly that is not against equality. This type of equality is called recognition of special needs or equality through differential treatment. For example, lower caste people were exploited for centuries so in order to raise them up to a level where they can actually be treated like other upper caste people this reservation system was made. However as there is nothing in this country that is not misused ,so reservations are definitely misused however they are still required. Also see not everyone has the same income or there is a huge gap in rich and poor, so in order to not become a country controlled by rich people and to uplift the poor, these facilities exist. All this is not against the notion of equality ,in fact it is a means to attain equality, namely equality through differential treatment or recognition of special needs.
