ANSWER:

A Rose For Emily, differences in thinking of North and South.

EXPLANATION:

As the civil war was fought between April 1861 and April 1865. The "south was in favor" of owning African Americans as slaves and the north was opposing this motion. In the story the African Americans are constantly called “Negros” or harsher derivatives of this word.

This shows that African Americans were treated as mere objects. They were "looked down" upon for their race and their social status. But even though the town was full of southern tradition northerner “Homer Barron” was accepted due to his generous nature and charming sense of humor.

This leads to the "meaning of the story".
