When a new trait occurs in a species, it can either benefit their survival or harm it.  If an organism has a helpful trait, such as camouflage, it will be able to live long enough to pass this trait onto its offspring. If an organism has a harmful trait it will be more likely to die before it is mature enough to have children. For example, most forest animals, such as deer that are born with albinism do not live long. This is because they are bright white so they are very visible compared to their environment. This makes it easier for predators to find them. So, organisms that are fit for survival will be naturally selected to pass on their traits, and those that are not fit for survival will not pass on thier traits.

Hope this helps!
