Despotism shown by Purnananda Burhagohain led to the Maomaria rebellion towards the end of the 18th century. He decided to settle in Jorhat where he ruled in a despotic way giving rise topological conspiracies. Maomorias attacked the Ahoms kingdom twice which created unrest in the region
