The poet and pauper is a play written by Rabindranath Tagore is about a rich poet named Kunj Bihari and a poor man named Bashambad. When Bashambad goes to Kunj Bihari for job, instead of giving him a job the poet forces him to listen to his poem. However, the poor man is unable to enjoy the poem since he is feeling frail from hunger and cold and keeps sneezing continuously which irritates the poet. The poet then ask the poor man to leave and neither offers him a job nor food, although it was dinner time. The poor man, hence had to stay outside and suffer in the cold and with hunger.

EXPLANATION:

The poor man and the poet are world apart when it came to stature. The poet was a worshipper of nature, and he was least friendly or hospitable. Though the poet was hungry yet he did not understand the hunger of the poor man. Even though it was dinner time, the poet did not offer work or food to the tired poor man. He told the poor man in a taunting manner to go away and feasted himself on dal, curry and rice. Moreover, when the poor man says he was hungry to the poet the poet sarcastically remarks that the moon beams, spring breeze and nectars of flowers would meet the poor man’s needs.

The poet also makes fun of the poor man when his teeth chatters with cold. On the other hand, the poor man is hungry and conveys his problem to the poet. The poor man is unable to get over his hunger and unlike the poet he is unable to afford a meal. He is also not able to enjoy the poet’s poem or admire nature or enjoy its scenic beauty because apart from being hungry he is unable to withstand the cold as he does not have shawl to wrap around himself. Thus the poet and the poor man have different physical, mental and financial status.
