Both the phenomenon i.e. solstices as well as equinoxes are related very clearly with each other and result into causing of the four seasons depending up the tilt of earth on its axis and its movement.

They signify certain points on the orbit of the earth i.e. around the sun and hence they happen only when the earth gets slightly tilted thereby reaching to its maximum angle position.

When looked from the Sun, they signify their gradual movement away from the Sun. However may be the outcome, it is quite clear that they signify seasons as a result hence.

When we experience the summer solstices, the earth gets tilted enough in such a way that the heat or rays from the sun can fall at a perpendicular manner at the region of Tropic of Cancer.
