Merits of elections :-

  1. Ensures the people's freedom of speech. conscience, assembly and action.
  2. Guarantees liberty and equality, which are necessary for human development.
  3. Allows SC, ST and OBCs to voice their opinion regarding their governance.
  4. Allows people to analyse the best government and leader for their country, by seeing the policies and programmes promised by different parties during campaigns.

Demerits of elections :-

  1. It is difficult to prevent corruption and malpractices.
  2. It sometimes leads to establish the majority view over the minority view.
  3. Party leaders and political office holders in the government influence and control the citizens, which may lead to misguidance.
  4. Conflicts between voters due to their different views.

(ii) People choose those who will form the government  and take major decisions on behalf of them.

(iii) People choose the party whose policies will guide  the government and law making

Demerits of elections in a democracy are as follows :

(i) A sense of disunity and ‘factionalism’ is created  by elections It promotes ‘party-politics’ in areas.

(ii) Different political parties and leaders often level  allegations against one another.

(iii) Parties and candidates often use dirty tricks to  win elections.

(iv) Sensible long-term policies are not formulated  because leaders and politicians have pressure to  win electoral fights.

(v) Unhealthy competition prevents some good people  who may wish to serve the country to take part in  election process.
