Merits of direct elections:

Firstly direct election is more democratic form of election.

Secondly it empowers the people and also makes the rulers accountable.

Thirdly it makes people more educated in playing active role in the government.

Demerits of direct elections:

A direct elections can prove expensive.

It is also a massive exercise which cannot be always fair and free.

The chances of choosing wrong and undeserving candidate by illiterate voters are high in direct elections.
