After gaining Independence, the Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the other leaders worked towards a long term growth plan. Their main goal was to build a self-reliant economy. So the Indian planners started giving priority to industrialization. For this the Nehru-Mahalanobis model was adopted. The economic policy aimed at making a break from the immediate past and tried to bring about economic growth.

The second year plan (1956–1961) gave a higher priority to Industrialization. It worked on the basis of the Mahalanobis model. The planning committee which discussed the Model was was chaired by Nehru. The Mahalanobis model was propounded in the year 1953 by the famous Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis.

As a result of these efforts the Indian economy started becoming self reliant. There was a noticeable increase in public investment and savings.

Jawaharlal Nehru planned a long-term growth, his most important plan was to give importance to industrialization. And for this Nehru- Mahalanobis model was introduced. The idea was to bring economic growth in alignment.

The planning committee was chaired by Jawaharlal Nehru and the model was propounded by Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the year 1953.

The idea of the model was to promote an economy with two sectors and each producing capital and consumer goods. The focus was also made on heavy good which were made with the help of machines. The idea was to eradicate import so that country would start making the things they import from other countries.

A lot of people claim that there was nothing much happened in the era of Nehru but in fact, the concept of industrialization started in his era.
