The Salt March :

Mahatma Gandhi found that salt march was a powerful symbol that would unite the nation .

➡️Salt was a comodity , which was consumed by all section of society.

The British government had the monopoly to manufactur salt . The tax on salt was increased thousand times. The common man found it difficult to meet the demand of salt tax . These demands were wide ranging so all section of the society came unitedly in the campaign .

Gandhi ji letter had stated that if these demands were ignored , there would be civil disobedience campaign .

Irwin was unwilling to negotiate , so Mahatma Gandhi started his famous _Salt March _ accompanied by 78 of his trusted volunteers on

12th march 1930.

They set out on foot for the coastal village of Dandi , Gujrat , 240 miles from their starting point at Sabarmati Ashram .

Here , it is worth mentioning that their sole purpose was to break the unjust Salt Law that had presented the Indians from making salt from sea water .

Thousands of people came here to hear Gandhiji wherever he stopped and he told them what he meant by _Swaraj_and urged them to peacefully defy British .

On 6th April , he reached Dandi and violated the law , manufacturing salt by boiling sea water.
