Social mobility is found in different forms and extents in the two main types of stratification i.e., caste stratification and class stratification. A comparison of the existence of social mobility in both these types of social stratification is quite important for understanding the nature of both of them.
I. Social Mobility in Caste System:
Caste system is constituted of closed groups where status is ascribed and not achieved. In other words, caste system is imposed upon the individual through the criterion of birth. The members of a caste are not even allowed to have close relations with the members of other castes.
They are bound by several restrictions regarding food, occupation, marriage, social intercourse and so forth. In this way, a member of a caste cannot even dream to become the member of a higher caste or a lower caste.
