Social organization: The Gupta dynasty originated from a family of landowners who gained administrative control in Magadha and parts of Uttar Pradesh.

Agriculture: Agriculture was the main activity in this age when people earned their livelihood through agriculture majorly.

Craft: Carved stone deity of Hindu art, Buddha figures and Jain Tirthankara figures could be witnessed in this age. Eminent sculpture centers like  Mathura and Gandhara were also witnessed. Both exported sculpture to other parts of northern India. The Ajanta, Elephanta, and Ellora caves were also made in this period. The Udayagiri Caves  and the Dashavatara Temple at Deogarh are also important pieces of craft made in this age.

Trade: India was linked to other markets via Silk route.

• Chief items of trade during this time were cashmere, cotton, spices etc.

• Trade through the sea route was common

• Propagation of the Indian culture took place through trade and commerce.
